Meetings

Our networking group’s model is atypical of most other networking organizations. Evening meetings are held every two weeks, in which members and their guests introduce themselves with a brief elevator speech of who they are and what they do. After the meeting’s agenda is completed, inclusive of committee reports and new business, two Spotlight Speakers each make a fifteen-minute presentation. The speakers explain in detail what they do and suggest how other members can effectively introduce them to appropriate business contacts to help increase their business.

A video monitor is available to anyone who wishes to make a full PowerPoint presentation. A Q&A session may then last another 5-10 minutes so that members can hone in on specific areas of the speaker’s business for clarification and better understanding of their work. In addition to our own members being slotted in as Spotlight Speakers, the group welcomes guest speakers whose affiliation and topic are deemed beneficial to the group as it relates to general business in the marketplace or to the personal enhancement and growth of our team.

Once the meeting is concluded, members have the opportunity to network on a one-to-one basis. Since we do not officially exchange leads as part of the meeting agenda, each member is encouraged to interface with each other outside of the meeting parameters by phone, e-mail, lunches, dinners, and at other social events.

Special Presentation: Commissioner of NYC Small Business Services Robert Walsh

The New York City Power Group hosted the city’s commissioner for small business services Robert Walsh, on Tuesday, May 31. Mr. Walsh spoke about the range of services New York provides for its small businesses and commented on how small business is impacted by the recent recession. Commissioner Walsh has been particularly effective in advancing opportunities for women and minorities in business.

Robert W. Walsh was appointed Commissioner of the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) by Mayor Bloomberg in 2002. During his tenure, he has reshaped the Agency to directly focus on and respond to the needs of the City’s 200,000 small businesses. During his tenure, SBS built a suite of services, called NYC Business Solutions, to help small businesses start, operate and expand. Under Walsh’s leadership, SBS energized the City’s promotion and support of minority and women-owned businesses, and reconfigured the City’s adult workforce programs to be used as a tool for economic development by linking employers to a skilled and qualified workforce.

Spotlight Speaker: John Morin Jr.

I will begin my presentation by reviewing exactly who AJM Nino is and what we do. I will also explain a little more about exactly what I do on a daily basis for AJM. Along with this I will explain how AJM has upgraded facilities, shipping and product quality to better serve our customers. This will lead into my quick overview of my new web-site. After reviewing the web-site I will select some products that I will talk about and explain their purpose and the markets that need them such as hand sanitizers, green products, etc. This will allow me to express to the other Power Group members how AJM can work with any kind of clients from small food service pizzerias in New Jersey to large multi tenant buildings in Manhattan. The reviewing of the web-site and select products will give the Power group members enough information to absorb and understand when referring AJM Nino, but it will not be so overwhelming that it creates confusion and disinterest from the group (for example everyone knows what a Lysol air freshener is and how it works but I will introduce them to a different way to disinfect and deodorize with an air freshener totally different from Lysol.) I also think that this will help distinguish the differences between Janitorial Supplier and Janitorial Cleaning Service such as yourself along with distinguishing differences between AJM and Kamco. Finally I will talk some time to explain a special section that I added to my web-site called Nino’s Network which is a work in progress but it is supposed to help extend the networking Power group through my web-site. I dedicated a page to recommend all the members businesses to any and all visitors/customers of my web-site. Please let me know if you need more detail than this for my presentation.

Spotlight Speaker: Karen Heller, Halstead Property

I was a professional journalist for the whole of my first career. And this career taught me how to speak directly to my target audience. I personally know the Manhattan real estate buyer pool, so my marketing is all written and shot exclusively for them. The result is that I get the listing price I promise to sellers if they follow my advice.

Since I accurately advise sellers, I do the same for buyers. I won’t let them overpay, but I will also provide accurate information so they can make the right choice. Some things to keep in mind about Manhattan:

  • Manhattan is an extremely desirable market of 1.6 million inhabitants who, while they only represent 19% of the New York City population, pay 60% of the real estate taxes.
  • If the Manhattan real estate bubble had continued, the average price per square foot would be $1,490. Today the average is $1,061, which is 16% below the peak of 2008. But DOUBLE the average price of the year 2000.
  • Every year 45 million people come to visit Manhattan, and fall in love with this island of less than 23 square miles (22.96 exactly).
  • The number of jobs in Manhattan rose by half a million between 1996 and 2008. Since then the city has lost 158,000 jobs in the current recession. Following the Savings and Loan crisis in 1992, unemployment was 11.1%.
  • There are 75 named neighborhoods in Manhattan!

Spotlight Speaker: Guy D’Aleo, M5 Networks Inc.
M5′s presentation focused on business impact through strategic use of voice and its impact and applicability to:

  • Multi-location clients seeking a uniform solution for all their sites.
  • Clients utilizing web-based CRM systems and integrating them with M5 services to enhance productivity and image via screen pops, click to dial, etc.
  • Impact value from measurement tools provided by M5 as part of its offering, hence the ability for sales management to gain insight into what their top producers do via phone, be it volume or quality of longer calls.
  • Support organizations that can also benefit from the metrics relative to their teams’ performance and that of individual team members.
  • System administration tools available for key personnel to manage their system remotely.
  • Emphasis on areas of impact to a company: ability to work from home, creation of a disaster recovery plan in advance, complete control over call flow.
  • Impact on a company’s image — “What do they sound like”?
  • The importance of continuous software upgrades with no additional expense to the M5 client.
  • M5′s proprietary software platform. As a software company, M5 has chosen to build its platform in such a way that the end user phones do not become outdated. They act instead like simple terminals accessing the intelligence of the M5 phone soft-switches.
  • Never having to own a phone system again; many firms don’t have an IT staff or are short-staffed.
